Expressive Arts Consultant Education
Application to Education

Project Title: Angles of Peace

Description: 100 students made beaded
hanging origami peace crane to enrich
understanding of angles and symmetry. The
expressive artist guided the students through
the creation process while talking to them
about local non-profit organizations. Students
will then choose to donate their art to one of
the following:
The Veteran's Center of Sarasota or Tidewell Hospice.
The projects intent was to strengthen mathematical
skills while reaching out to those in need with
messages of peace and encouragement.
The students were also allowed to make an extra
crane as a personal gift.
Sound healing music was provided to deepen the
experience.

Feedback came directly from the students
reflection on their learning in the project.
The mathematical connections they made were in
the areas of symmetry, use of the coordinate plane,
and a connection of how the act of folding every aspect
of the paper was similar to solving algebraic equations;
what they did to one side, they had to do to the other.
In addition to this, the use of the story of 1000 cranes
connected math and literature and the students left with
some new vocabulary and an increased awareness of social
services in our community and the importance of peace work.
Additionally students learned about Hiroshima, effects of war,
trauma, and end of life awareness.

Interestingly, a recurring theme, noted from the students,
was how good it felt to donate their art to someone in need,
and their receptivity to being part of improving their
community.  On a scale of 1-5, 99% of students rated the
project a 5 and would like to do it again and/or similar
projects in the future. Both receiving agencies were delighted
to receive student's cranes.

This project was pilot tested on a group of 100 seventh grade

students at a local middle school in 2009.  In addition to an appropriate

topic for Math class, as it relates to Geometry and Algebra, this project can easily

be adapted to suit  World Geography,  English literature, or Psychology  classes.
